There's a Martin spinoff happening for a character that only appeared in two episodes

20th Century Fox

Tommy Davidson turned a two-episode role into the opportunity of a lifetime. On Martin, he played Varnell Hill, a popular talk show host who 'moved on up' from Detroit to Hollywood. In the episode "Hollywood Swingin', Part 1," Gina gets a promotion, and even Pam gets a new title, moving into Gina's old position. Martin was under the impression that he was giving a speech at the opening of a community center, but Stan reveals that Varnell Hill is in town, so there's been a change in plans.

As usual, those words go into one ear and out the other as Martin steps on stage and attempts to get everyone's attention (he thought the people were there for him). He and Ms. Geri bicker, but that stops when Varnell walks out to a large applause that Martin thought was for him. Varnell delivers an over-the-top performance of his talk show's theme song, all about signing autographs, kissing women, and being at the top of his game. It ends with his signature saying, "Did ya miss me?"

"Ya know, I may be one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, but it wouldn't mean a damn thing if I couldn't bring it back to the community. A place where I'm from," he says. Then, after a fake cry, he immediately tells the people to watch his show and buy his CDs, forgetting that he was there to break the glass bottle as an official way to show that the center is now open.

Stan introduces Martin to Varnell, revealing that Martin was an intern when the star left and went on to make it big. Later, Varnell appears on Martin's show, showing off and telling Martin that if he's ever in Hollywood, he'll put him on.

Cole has free plane tickets for the crew to go wherever they want, and Martin chose Hollywood, quitting his job and thinking that appearing on Varnell's show would be his big break.

In part 2, he finds out that Varnell was lying and had stolen some of Martin's lines and material. Now Tommy Davidson is reviving the character for a spinoff centered on Varnell Hill, expected to air this fall.
