Christopher B. Duncan on his most-known role: ''There are people who will always see me as Braxton.''
A name like Braxton P. Hartnabrig is surely unique, and when it belongs to one of Black culture's most humorous sitcom characters, you can bet a laugh will follow. Played by Christopher B. Duncan, the character was Jamie King's annoying, nerdy nemesis, aka his biggest hater. To be fair, Jamie would often bother and make fun of Braxton, so it was only right for the character to stand up for himself.
Among the many characters Christopher B. Duncan has brought to life, none evoke the same sense of nostalgia as Braxton. The actor often reflects on this role, acknowledging the opportunities and recognition it brought him. However, he also longs for people to see the full spectrum of his talent beyond the role.
"I have a bittersweet relationship with that issue, that I deal with till this very day," Duncan said during a Comedy Hype interview when asked about the impact of the role. "There are people who will always see me as Braxton."
Many people don't understand the impact of a well-known character until they're the actor benefitting from the success of it. Although there are many pros; there's a lot of cons as well.
"If I walk into a room full of, let's say, brothers and sisters... I literally hear 'What's up Braxton! What's up man?' It's like a wrench in my gut because it's immediately saying to me 'Even though you're here and we're seeing you for [a new] dramatic role for this romantic lead, for this hard-hitting, heavy character; even though we're seeing you for that we just made it clear to you how we see you.'"
