Coby Bell on his ''The Game'' character: ''Fans give him a pass because he's Jason''

CBS Television Distribution

Jason Pitts is a complicated man—a rich veteran football player who's a penny-pincher and treated his ex-wife, Kelly, more like an annoying bird than his partner. Oh, and the silly things that would come out of his mouth? We can't say some of the punches he received were good, but they were the consequences of not "thinking before you speak."

Coby Bell portrayed the character on The Game so well that, despite his credentials, we still see him as Jason Pitts. In the later seasons, Pitts seemed to mature slightly after marrying a new woman, Chardonnay.

"I think he definitely evolves this season," Bell told VIBE during an interview in 2012. This was when The Game shifted from sitcom to drama. "He still keeps his Jason-ness but he has his new love interest that Brandy's playing—that's Chardonnay. She does an amazing job. I think for the first time, we see someone who keeps Jason in check, and it kinda changes him."

Chardonnay keeps him in check (for the most part), but Jason will always be Jason in some way, shape, or form. Viewers loved that about the Sabers player, though. The character maintained familiarity as the series underwent many changes, including losing its two star characters, Melanie and Derwin.

"It doesn't annoy me because it's fun to play that character. The writers have him set up where he can kinda say anything and do anything, and the fans give him a pass because he's Jason, and that's so fun because I get to play the most ridiculous inappropriate things, and it's ok, so I never want him to lose that."
