Which Living Single friend do you relate to the most?
"We are livinggggg, singleeeee/ Ooh in a '90s kind of world, I'm glad I got my girls!"
When you hear the theme song to Living Single, you can't help but dance. The classic '90s sitcom opened many doors for black actors to star in their own series. Queen Latifah, who played Khadijah James, pitched the idea of a series based on a group of friends, four women and two men.
Not many in the TV industry thought the idea would make for "good TV," but clearly, they were wrong. Khadijah, Maxine, Regine, and Synclaire were completely different women whose worlds connected perfectly to each other's lives. Which friend are you?
Khadijah James
The Journalist and Publisher of Flava Magazine, aka The Motherly Friend
"Klink, Klink" — a phrase you'll hear Khadijah say when things go right!
She kept everyone in check, not just her employees. The journalist and publisher often had to mediate between Max and Regine when the two clashed. When she wasn't doing that, Khadijah had to ensure her cousin, Synclaire, wasn't "burning down the place."
She also gave Synclaire a job as a receptionist at Flava Magazine (we love a supportive cousin).
Out of all the friends, Khadijah was the most supportive, level-headed, thought logically, and knew how to defend herself. But don't get it twisted—she wasn't "the one to try."
Regine Hunter
The Fashionista, aka Somewhat of a "Gold Digger"
"Smooches" is Regine's favorite phrase. She was the fashionista friend who thought highly of herself, although her mom begged Khadijah's mom to let Regine stay with her. Regine loved lavish things and often sought the most established men to date.
Some call that a woman who knows what she wants; others call that a gold digger. Either way, she was "getting to the bag, by any means necessary."
Maxine Shaw
The Attorney, aka a Food Moocher???
"Maxine Shaw, Attorney at Law" is Max's phrase. She established herself as the friend with a stable career who could afford to live on her own, yet she always ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner at her friend's apartment. Max didn't have a "type" when she dated men; since she had her own money, it didn't matter if they weren't the richest.
However, she had a love/hate relationship with Kyle Barker that she wanted to keep a secret as much as possible. (Regine was the last to find out, by the way)
Synclaire James
The Aspiring Actress, aka Mrs. Overton Wakefield Jones
"Woo, Woo, Wo" is what you'll hear Synclaire say as an attempt to make someone feel better. She's the spunky cousin of Khadijah, who was lost until she realized she wanted to be an actress. Although Synclaire wasn't the brightest out of the group, she knew how to follow her dream.
Synclaire was also the first to get married; the love of her life was Overton Wakefield Jones, the trusted handyman in the building.
