Angie Stone's vocals for Girlfriends' theme song set the vibe for the series

There's an iconic run that Angie Stone does at the start of Girlfriends' theme song that lets viewers know what they're about to watch. Her soulful voice welcomes people at home to the lives of Joan Clayton, Maya Wilkes, Toni Childs, and Lynn Searcy. The friends, all in their late twenties, are in different places in their lives. Joan is a successful lawyer but wants to be a wife more than anything; Maya is her assistant who "made it out of the hood" and has a husband and child. Toni is the gold digger who wants a rich husband; Lynn doesn't know what to do with her life except get another degree. Then, there's William, a successful lawyer who is determined to rise up the ranks at the law firm.
Girlfriends, an early '00s drama, found its way into the hearts of Gen X, Millennials, and even Gen Z. However, before you can see what issues the friends will go through in each episode, Angie Stone's voice captures your attention with the lyrics, "Ooooh. My Girlfriends/There through thick and thin/ My Girlfriends (my girlfriends)/ There through anything. My Girlllllfriends."
Stone didn't realize how much of an impact her beautiful voice had on the series' success when she first recorded it, but later in life, she saw its cultural impact.
"I did that so long ago, and because I have the ability to change my voice, [I think] I'd be great for The Masked Singer," Stone said during an interview with Niara Jai posted on YouTube in 2023. "When I did the song, Mara Brock, who created the show [asked me if I could do it] I was on my way to the airport...but anyway, there was a run on the song that they started to write the show to. And when they started to write, they realized that if they go past this run, the ratings were low. But if they get it in time where they're right on the run, the ratings are super high. So they told me, not only is that a theme song, that song has magic to it."
Angie Stone also appeared in an episode of Girlfriends titled "Blinded By the Lights." In the episode, she plays Darla Mason, Ellis's overbearing agent.
