Brandy's childhood dream was to become a singer and meet Whitney Houston

CBS Television Distribution/ Walt Disney Television

Idols are individuals we put on a pedestal. They're the ones who "made it happen" and are now fully living in dreams that don't become reality for many. They inspire us to do better, to be better. For Brandy, that person was the amazingly talented Whitney Houston. You can just imagine the singer's reaction when she found out she'd be a princess, and Houston would play her Fairy Godmother.

It was 1997, a time when the sight of Black princesses on television was a rarity. Then came Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella, produced by Walt Disney Television. The role of Cinderella was initially for Houston, but as the years went on, she and the producers thought she'd be best as the Fairy Godmother. Then the question, "Who is going to play the princess?" came along, and Houston had a special someone in mind.

Brandy was a rising star in the mid to late Nineties—starring in her own sitcom Moesha and gaining a platinum debut album. Whitney felt that she embodied a true princess with her energy.

It was a dream that felt too far to reach Brandy until it happened. Brandy met her idol in 1995, instantly shedding tears as she was led to where Houston stood. They became Godmother and Goddaughter, and their connection was not just strong, but profound, both on-screen and off.

The Moesha star often describes working with Houston as "magical," and that's not just because she turned pumpkins into horses. They built a bond that is part of history.
