Niecy Jackson was supposed to be a one-off character on Moesha

CBS Television Distribution

"Y'all, we gotta stop gossiping," Moesha said to Niecy and Kim after they got into an argument that started because the teenage girls were the queens of drama. Or, in the words of Moesha's stepmom, they were the "Divas of Dirt." Moesha, Kim, and Niecy were a trio of best friends at Crenshaw High who went through life together, with the addition of Hakeem Campbell.

If you're a superfan of the series, you'd know that Kim, Hakeem, and Moesha have been friends since early childhood, growing up together in the same neighborhood. Niecy came along as a friend in High School, and it's written that way because Shar Jackson's character was only intended to be in the pilot episode. The character also had a different name.

"She was just supposed to be there for the first episode and her name wasn't even Niecy. Her name was Gail," Jackson said in a 2020 interview with Netflix's Strong Black Lead. "I'm happy they changed that. I didn't feel like a Gail."

We're also happy the writers changed it! The show wouldn't be the same without Niecy. She was the nonchalant friend of the group who didn't have much privacy at home because she had a ton of siblings, but the character had more freedom than Moesha, that's for sure!
