Kim Coles on Living Single's connection with their audience: ''It was special. It was magical.''

Everyone has that one cousin they'll take under their wing and have to watch over because they're...too nice. In other words, people can easily take advantage of them because they haven't learned the beauty of standing up for themselves and saying no.

That was Synclaire James for many of the Living Single seasons. She started finding her voice and speaking up for herself around the end of the third season, but Khadijah James was the cousin who took her under her wing. Synclaire's transformation not only added depth to her character but also brought a new dynamic to the show's narrative. Played by Kim Coles, Synclaire became viewers' favorite TV cousin with her bubbly personality and spunky outfits.

She was one of the main cast characters in Living Single, a show that was not only entertaining but also groundbreaking in its portrayal of African American characters and their lives. This cultural and social relevance is one of the reasons why, 30 years later, we're still indulging in reruns.

Back in the '90s, live studio audiences were one of the best things to happen to a sitcom. Their laughs were contagious, igniting cackles from home audiences and bringing out the best in the actors in the studio.

According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Coles said the relationship between Living Single's cast and their audience was special. "There was another level that would pop when we had an audience in front of us," Coles remembers. "It was special. It was magical. The live audience was truly part of the show," she said.
