Kym Whitley's recurring character, Gertrude ''Gertie'' Lowe, was a classic hater

"Gertie, don't get hurt." — Nikki Parker
Threats are something no one wants hurling their way from Nikki Parker; because, a threat means she's just a few minutes from actually doing what she warned you about. Did that stop Gertrude ''Gertie'' Lowe from testing her? No. Gertie, played by Kym Whitley, put the 'hate' in hater. The character was extremely jealous of Nikki on The Parkers, even in church.
However, what set her apart from other haters on TV was how she "stood on business." Did this result in Nikki hurting her from time to time? Absolutely, but haters never give up—it's in their blood.
We all know Parker did not play about her one-sided relationship with Professor Oglevee. In her heart, she and Stanley were engaged, and any woman he dated (he was a single man) was a homewrecker. Gertie was one of those. She attempted to come on to the Professor any chance she got, knowing Nikki wasn't too far away.
Gertie was also determined to get Nikki out of her position as head of the Choir. In the episode "Amazing Grace," Nikki is stressed, and her guardian angel, Grace, helps. Only Nikki can see Grace, which makes everyone think she's not in her right mind when they see her talking to herself in the hallway.
Gertie attempts to get everyone to side with her, but it never works. The character could seriously write a book called "How To Be A Hater."
