Martin is proof that not all shows need an ''enemies to lovers'' storyline
People love watching shows where two enemies discover their hatred for each other is just a mask for true feelings. The hidden love reaches its climax eventually, and all of a sudden, they're a couple. Well, usually, it starts as a situationship which then turns into a relationship, but that doesn't need to happen in every series. The '90s sitcom Martin is proof that two enemies can, in fact, remain enemies, even with character growth.
Martin Payne (Martin Lawrence) and Pamela 'Pam' James (Tichina Arnold) hated each other. There's not one episode in the show where the two aren't throwing jabs. Martin's girlfriend, and then wife, Gina Waters (Tisha Campbell), is Pam's best friend, so since they're in the same circle, not interacting is impossible.
If you're on social media, you'll see many videos of fans of the sitcom saying that Martin and Pam had more chemistry than the main character and Gina. Some even believe the show should've been flipped, with Pam as the host's significant other and Gina as the bickering bestie.
Yet, we're glad that didn't happen. The sitcom worked perfectly as it is, though some fans have pointed out that a few jokes aged horribly. Overall, there was nothing wrong with Pam being the fly, single woman, in the crew. The character even dated Martin's friend, Tommy, for a minute.
Martin and Pam's insults made up some of the show's funniest one-liners. There was even an episode where Martin had dreams that he and Gina's best friend were a thing (Season 2, Episode 24), and it looked so out of place. So yeah, the producers did right by choosing it to be this way.
