Rachel True on working with Telma Hopkins: ''She's a great comedic actress.''

Mother-daughter relationships play a crucial role in character development on television (and in real life, of course). We see all types of these duos, from the quirky relationship of Regine and her mom on Living Single to the loving bond of Nikki and Kim Parker on The Parkers. These relationships, whether relatable or purely fictional, can significantly shape the characters and the show's narrative.
Another fictional Black mother-daughter duo that viewers enjoyed watching was Mona and Phyllis on Half & Half. Although Phyllis was overbearing and desperately wanted to be a grandmother, she was always there for Mona. The on-set chemistry between Rachel True and Telma Hopkins was so palpable that it made their bond look real to us. If you also felt that authenticity, you'd be happy to know that True was grateful for Hopkins's guidance on the show.
"It was a very silly family friendly show and I was really lucky to have Telma Hopkins play my mom," the actress said during an interview on The Humor Mill in 2016.
"She's a great comedic actress. She was very generous to me, and by generous, I mean – I was very new to sitcom acting; she'd done a ton of them, and she'd help me out. Helped me figure out jokes because there are some actors who are selfish and they don't want you to get a laugh and they want to get all the laughs and [she] could've easily gone out her way to make my life horrible but she's not that person at all."
