Terry Crews said ''Are We There Yet?'' mimics his life in a lot of ways
Actors often gravitate towards roles that mirror their personal lives, making the characters they portray more relatable. These decisions are influenced by a variety of factors, from financial needs to the importance of the role, the co-stars, the script, and the character's traits.
This personal connection to the roles they play adds a layer of authenticity to their performances.
When actors truly embody their roles, interviewers often inquire if the part reflects their lives in any way. Terry Crews's portrayal of Nick Persons in Are We There Yet? was a prime example of this. His performance was so authentic that it reminded him of his own marriage.
"I married my wife when she was a single mom with a little girl. It's all about a blended family. When I met her 23 years ago, we got married when the baby was two, now she's 24 with her own baby," Crews said during an interview with Essence. "So I know what it's like to marry into a family when the kids don't like you, because that little baby did not like me. My oldest wanted nothing to do with me. It's kind of a thankless job, there's so many ways do it wrong but there's only one way to do it right."
Are We There Yet? shows the everyday issues of a blended family in a sitcom-type way. Suzzane has two children who were not trying to give Nick Persons a chance when their mother introduced him to them. Eventually, they realize that their real father has started another family and doesn't really have time for them. They begin softening up and allowing Nick into their lives, especially when they realize how happy he makes their mom.
