Essence Atkins' middle name pays homage to this classic Star Trek character
Some characters hold a special place in our hearts, impacting our lives in ways that go beyond mere entertainment. Despite being fictional, we form a deep emotional bond with them, often aspiring to embody their bravery, style, and other admirable traits. Consider this the next time your parents fondly recall a classic actress, character, or television show.
They, too, loved watching television when they were younger and had series that they watched religiously. Some were so intrigued by what they saw that they decided to name their children after those they loved. Actress Essence Atkins has been in the industry for decades, playing nostalgic characters in sitcoms, dramas, and films that are beloved in Black culture and beyond. Many remember her as Dee Dee on Half & Half, Tasha Yvette Henderson on Smart Guy and more.
Her mom was a devoted fan of Star Trek: The Original Series, a groundbreaking sci-fi show that captivated audiences in the 60s with its futuristic vision of technology and the world.
Uhura was played by the loveable Nichelle Nichols, one of the first Black actresses to gain recognition for her hard work and dedication to her historic character in space. Atkins' mom wanted to pay homage to Nichols' character and named her daughter "Essence Uhura Atkins."
How cool is that?!
