Kim Fields on playing Regine Hunter: ''She was so different from me.''

Warner Bros.

Ask anyone who grew up in the Nineties, "Which Kim Fields character is your favorite?" Although Tootie from Facts of Life is a classic character of Fields in the Eighties, you'll hear Regine Hunter more than anything. In Living Single, the character was all about living lavishly. From dating rich men to wearing designer clothes and always looking top-tier, you couldn't tell the character she wasn't going to be a rich housewife.

It's one reason she always clashed with Maxine Shaw, the attorney at law with her own money who could spot Regine's gold-digging intentions from afar.

Kim Fields played the character so well that many thought she WAS Regine Hunter. In reality, those thoughts couldn't be far from the truth. "With [the role of] Régine, I never really had that sense of 'I've arrived' because I don't know what it is I'm trying to arrive to. If anything, I used to thank my sanity like, 'Oh, I still have that, I must've made it,' especially considering that I'm a former child star," she told Bustle during an interview in 2021.

"With Living Single, I saw it as a great opportunity to be a character I've never done before. I look at my work as a craftsman — you do all the work that goes into creating something that's beautiful, iconic, strong, or whatever it may be. That's how I looked at Régine because she was so different from me."
