Why did Marques Houston leave Sister, Sister after four seasons?

CBS Television Distribution

Imagine going on tour with your group and hearing, "Go home, Roger!" That was reality for Marquis Houston, who grew up playing the annoying boy next door on Sister, Sister.

In 1992, he founded/became a member of the group Immature, also known as IMx. While the group's debut album, On Our Worst Behavior, made its way around, the sophomore one, Playtyme Is Over (1994), really had them on the rise. Music was Houston's first love, but when Sister, Sister premiered, everyone saw him as Roger, not a chart-topping artist.

He did have a chance to sing on the show from time to time, but that wasn't the same as performing on stage at a concert.

"I did four seasons, and then I left the show. I just felt like I didn't wanna be old and be Roger," Houston told the R&B Money Podcast, according to COMPLEX. "Like, I didn't wanna be Jaleel White...I was two different people on the road. I'm sexy. I'm taking my shirt off. I'm doing all, you know, on stage, and then here I'm goofy. I'm being professional and [going] to school, and it's like two different characters. I'm like, this dude, he's ruining Immature."

Many child actors wanted to avoid being like Jaleel White, who played Steve Urkel on Family Matters. White was typecast, and he can never escape the Urkel image. Houston wanted to get out while he could, although he's still seen as Roger.

He continued, "Roger was overtaking Immature. Once I started going out and everybody [started] saying 'Go home Roger!' like I don't want that, I don't want that. We [started] getting a little bit older as Immature, and it started to become like, I'm like, I don't want to be seen as Roger because now I'm this nerd, and like I said, everything was about mystique back then. So it was like, now I'm over-exposing myself as an entertainer, and then it's not working for the group."
